I think the typical answer for SaaS ERP is one.  We get one development/test instance and one production instance.
On prem or in OCI, we typically have 2-3 dev/test instances and one QAT.

Thanks to OATUG Community for voting on the poll and reply to this post.
I was surprised to find that the majority voted for 1-3 test instances instead of a larger number.
Granted that a separate patch or performance testing instance is not required, still integration testing, data migration, system test and user acceptance testing would make the non-product instances (all are called test instances for simplicity here) be more in the 4-6 category.

Hi Mohan, the 4-6 category could certainly be required during an implementation for things such as data conversion, integration testing, etc. In my opinion 1-3 instances such as Prod, Dev, Test or perhaps QA are ideal for once live on SaaS and each instance serves a purpose. Be strategic with the number of instances as the more you have the more it will cost - do you really need 4-6 instances? Can integration testing share an instance whereas data conversion will likely need its own to start. Do you need a separate instance for training? Create an instance strategy as part of your implementation and align the instance needs with each phase of the project. Plan your instances wisely!

    Mohan,

Currently for our HCM cloud migration we have 4 non-prod instances, 3 devs and 1 test.  I believe you get 1 non-production free and the rest you pay additional for.  Once we go live I expect that number to go down in number.  I suspect that we will have a similar setup when we go to ERP cloud.  Devs for financial, supply chain, and manufacturing.  One test and of course one production.  After implementation is complete we will likely only keep one dev environment.
