Java web forms using Edge or Chrome instead of IE?

  • 1.  Java web forms using Edge or Chrome instead of IE?

    Posted 03-22-2021 05:01 PM
    Hello,

My apologies if this is in the incorrect forum.  We currently use Internet Explorer to launch our Java web forms for Oracle EBS 12.1.3.  Has anyone been able to use Edge, Chrome, or a different browser to launch the Java web forms in a similar environment?  If so, what configurations or patches were needed?

Thank you in advance for any advice provided.

    Regards,
    Tim Porterfield

    Hi, Tim.

Chrome/Edge do not allow Java plug-ins, so unless you use some sort of extension that may be risky or not work quite right, you can only use IE.  However, since IE will be de-supported later this year, I would suggest you switch to Java Web Start, which will allow you the freedom to use whatever browser you wish with Java forms. We made the switch a coupe years back and it works very well for us. We were on 12.1.3 some time ago and are currently on 12.2.7.

Please take a look at My Oracle Support Doc ID 2188898.1 for a very good, detailed look at Java Web Start.

Does anyone know if Java version 16 works with EBS 12.2.8?  I heard the JRE plug in part is very different from Java version 9 on.  We currently are on Java 8 v191 on the client side.

Thanks for any help on this.

Steven – I do not know that answer, however researching Java 16 reveals it is not an LTS (long-term support) version and will be obsoleted by Java 17, which will be LTS and is slated for release in September of this year. Java 8 (also LTS) seems to be the standard for EBS. Not sure of your context (other than you are on 12.2.8), whether you mean for launching Java forms as part of the EBS or for development, etc. You mentioned plug-ins but modern browsers have done away with Java plug-ins, so Java Web Start is recommended.
