The OAUG Analytics, BI and Big Data SIG Insider's Guide to COLLABORATE 19

By Blog Squad posted 02-05-2019 12:00 AM

COLLABORATE 19, the largest meeting of Oracle user groups representing the full family of Oracle business applications and database solutions, is taking place Sunday, April 7 through Thursday, April 11 at the Henry B. González Convention Center in San Antonio, TX. The event is co-hosted by the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG), the Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG), and Quest Oracle Community (Quest), which means this is the biggest meeting of Oracle users outside of Oracle OpenWorld! As a result, the event can be a bit overwhelming, so I wanted to share tips and tricks from my many years of attending the conference.

Pre-Conference Workshops

The OAUG hosts pre-conference workshops on Sunday that provide "deep dives" into specific topics; these are a great way to get detailed instruction (and sometimes continuing professional education credits!) and to network with like-minded people.

One workshop is particularly relevant to the Analytics community (bias alert: my Performance Architects coworker John McGale is presenting this session!): Sunday, April 7, 12:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.: Hands On Oracle Analytics Cloud Service!

The session description reads, "In this workshop we will be going over all aspects of Oracle Analytics Cloud Service (OAC), which is the latest state-of-the-art cloud service offering from Oracle for cloud-based analytics and BI. We will walk you through every aspect of this service from sizing, configuration, development, and deployment. We will be using our very own OAC instance to put you in the driver's seat and walk through various business scenarios to get a true appreciation of this next generation BI cloud application!"

Add this workshop (additional fee to attend) to your COLLABORATE 19 experience when you register for the conference.

Those of you who attended COLLABORATE last year in Las Vegas probably remember that we threw the best party of the conference at the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay for the Analytics, BI and Big Data and EPM (Hyperion) Special Interest Group (SIG) communities!

The OAUG Analytics, BI and Big Data SIG is hosting our SIG meeting on Monday, April 8, from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Add OAUG Analytics, BI and Big Data SIG: Oracle Strategy Update & Case Studies to your COLLABORATE 19 agenda.

We will be providing updates and product strategy from the Oracle product team, and presenting case study examples and best practices regarding the use of Oracle Analytics cloud and on-premises solutions such as Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC), Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) and Oracle BI Applications (OBIA).

Reception

We've had such overwhelming interest in the event that we've already scheduled a party at COLLABORATE 19 in San Antonio for our community. Here's the catch...registration is open to the entire OAUG community on the website already. So please sign up ASAP if you're attending the conference so that we can make sure you have a slot. Otherwise, it's first-come, first-served...and it will sell out. The party will be held on Tuesday, April 9, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Poolside Terrace and is officially called, "Analytics, BI, Big Data and EPM/Hyperion Reception."Pre-register by adding to your conference agenda. Many thanks to sponsors Axia Consulting, NuWave Solutions and Performance Architects for their continued support of our SIG communities.

Presentations

Analytics Turbo Talks “in action” at COLLABORATE 18.

The track relevant to our SIG community is called, "Data Science and Analytics."There are twelve subject areas within this track, so it's important for you to do your research and to make sure that you plan your time at the conference accordingly.

We strongly recommend attending the Oracle roadmap sessions, as these are probably the only public roadmap sessions you'll get to see until Kscope this June or OpenWorld in the fall.

Our SIG leadership team is also presenting the following sessions, so please make sure to add them to your calendars:

Other Fun Stuff…and Good Networking

Having fun with volunteers and staff at the 2018 conference kickoff party.

Other annual events that are really fun and that offer great networking opportunities include:

  • Welcome Reception. Held on Sunday, April 7, 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. (venue TBA as of this blog publication), this a "must attend" because pretty much everyone shows up to "see and be seen" the first night of the conference.
  • Exhibitor Showcase Receptions. On Monday, April 8, and Tuesday, April 9, from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in the Exhibit Hall, you can get free adult beverages and heavy appetizers and vendors pull out all the stops with games, prizes and giveaways.
  • Attendee Appreciation Event. On Wednesday, April 10, from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. (venue TBA as of this blog publication), this is the big conference blowout with free adult beverages and a full dinner, plus dancing, contests and whatever else the fabulous OAUG staff and board have dreamed up!

We look forward to seeing you at the conference!
