Carnitas Lonja, a taco shop on the southside of San Antonio, garners national attention for flavor and authenticity. Rapidly becoming a staple of San Antonio's taco scene, ordering a handmade corn tortilla with well-seasoned pork goes for around $3. These dishes feature hearty staples like biscuits and fried chicken, creamed corn fritters and their popular charcoal grilled ribeye. Owners Chef PJ and Lindsey Edwards work with local farmers to curate each menu.

Roadmap Brewing
The latest brewery to hit the San Antonio scene brings a hip locale serving quality local beer on tap. With 11 options on tap, a variety of exclusive beers are available to try including an IPA, Coffee Milk Stout, German-style Kolsch and an Imperial Stout.

The Rough Rider Bar at the Menger Hotel
Just outside the Alamo, the Rough Rider Bar at the Menger Hotel is declared the oldest continuously operating saloon in San Antonio history. Legend has it that Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt enlisted recruits at the bar to fight in the 1898 Spanish-American War, earning the title of one of the 10 most historic bars in America. Open Monday – Saturday, 11 am – midnight, and Sunday noon – midnight, there's no better place to grab a history lesson and a drink all at the same time!

Places to Shop

Much like the city itself, San Antonio's shopping destinations offer a rich and diverse retail spread. From art villages to chic retail, San Antonio is a mecca for authentic shopping.

Market Square

Full of color and offering a friendly, humble appeal, Market Square is the largest Mexican market north of the Rio Grande. Family-owned cafes making up Market Square offer sweet aromas of fresh pan dulce (sweet bread) and hot chocolate, while working artists offer local and imported jewelry, Talaverca ceramics, art and more.

La Villita Historic Arts Village
Originally established by Spanish soldiers stationed at The Alamo, "the little village" turned into a historic arts village. Here you will find shops, cafes and galleries housed in a beautiful architecturally restored residence.

Honorable Mentions

The Alamo
The historical location of the famous 1836 battle, the Alamo is the most visited historic landmark in Texas. This beautiful, 300-year-old Spanish fortress is open year-round and free for everyone to visit.
